August Meeting!

With our August meeting, we are getting back on track with the regular schedule (2nd Saturday of every month) after a very full and active summer of homebrew activities.

The FOSSILS/LAGERS Campout (affectionately known as “Beer Camp ‘08”) at Otter Creek was a smashing success.  Great homebrew, wonderful food, friends and weather—and the ‘Bubble Truck’ to add to the family fun.  Who could ask for more?  Thanks to all who pitched in to make it great!

Keg Liquors ‘Fest of Ale’ June 7th was a ton of fun, even though a more appropriate name would have been ‘Beer and Sweat II- The Indiana Version’.  I don’t think anyone expected it to be so hot and humid that day, but the beer was flowing, and I believe everyone had a good time.  Another great part of the event was the Silent Auction which generated $1500 for the ‘Crusade for Children’ charity.  Way to go!

Several FOSSILS members participated in the American Homebrew Association’s National Convention, June 19 - 21 in Cincinnati. FOSSILS hosted a hospitality booth on Club Night June 20.

Indiana Microbrewers Festival- July 19th- Indianapolis

The Indiana Microbrewers Festival is coming up quickly!  The club has decided to not to hold a regular meeting in July.  We are planning a “field trip” to the Indiana Microbrewers Festival on July 19th.  Cost is $85 for the round trip bus, ticket to get into the festival and beer on the bus in case you get thirsty on the way, but! FOSSILS officers have elected to subsidize paid FOSSILS members $10 to reduce the cost to $75!  The trip is run by Jeff and Rick Tours.  For all that have been on one of their trips, they really know how to do a road trip!  Send an emai to Jeff Gesser at

profgesser@insightbb.com for reservations and updated information.

Subject: FW: Ohio State Fair Homebrew Competition

I am pleased to announce that the 2008 Ohio State Fair Homebrew Competition is going to be the largest one yet with 260 entries received!  Of course that also means we are going to need more judges, so if you haven't already registered and are available to join us on July 19 we need your help!  Further details on the competition are in my original email below.

I am attaching a judge registration form which you can complete and email (or fax) back to me.  If you would rather not bother to fill out the form, you can simply email me back and let me know whether or not you are available to judge.  If you are able to judge, please let me know if you are available for the morning and/or afternoon session (a copy of the tentative competition agenda is also attached) and what styles you prefer (or prefer not) to judge.

If you know of any other qualified judges, or experienced homebrewers who are interested in becoming a judge, please forward this message to them.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thanks,

Re:  2008 Ohio State Fair Homebrew Competition

Date:  April 10, 2008

The 2008 Ohio State Fair Homebrew Competition will be held Saturday, July 19th at the Ohio Expo Center.  Gordon Strong will be serving as Judge Director.

We are in need of BJCP sanctioned judges and other beer judging experts and would like to extend to you an invitation to judge at our AHA/BJCP  sanctioned competition.  Please take a moment to indicate on the attached judge registration form whether or not you will be available to judge at our competition and then email it back to me.  I would appreciate receiving your response by May 9th.  Your services would be provided on a gratuitous basis, with the Ohio State Fair providing a complimentary meal.

This year’s menu will include: grilled bratwurst sandwich, veggie wraps, green beans, cole slaw, cookies, brownies, iced tea, coffee and water.   There will also be coffee and donuts provided in the morning.  Once again this year, we are offering out of town judges a complimentary room night at the Holiday Inn on the Lane.

At this point, I am trying to get an initial estimate of the number of judges we will have.  If you indicate that you will be able to judge, I will contact you by the end of June to re-confirm your participation and will mail you directions and an itinerary for the competition.

We had a record number of 224 entries last year and would love to have you join us this year.  If you have any questions regarding our competition, please feel free to contact me at (614) 644-4126 or b.chance@expo.state.oh.us      I appreciate your consideration and look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you.

The 2008 Ohio State Fair is July 30 - August 10!

Free Homebrewing Ingredients

The FOSSILS club has a standing offer to pay for ingredients if you will bring half of your beer to one of the club meetings.  For example, if you make a 10 gallon batch, bring 5 gallons to the next meeting and you will get your 5 gallons for free.  What a deal!

We also encourage homebrew bottles, growlers, mini-kegs and of course kegs at our meetings.

FOSSILS Members!  Pay thy dues!

FOSSILS membership dues are payable in January by cash or check.  Check with Treasurer Denny Stapp at any meeting.  As a reminder, FOSSILS dues are $18 per year (a true bargain) and include sampling privileges at meetings, member-priced premium items and voting rights.  Dues are structured thusly:

“Family” membership = dual membership for a couple consisting of wife/husband/significant other.  Both designated adults are considered to be active members for the purpose of voting and other member benefits.

“Individual” membership = single membership with the privilege of bringing a guest to meetings.  The dues-paying individual only is considered to be an active member for the purpose of voting in elections and other member benefits (sale-priced t-shirts, for example).
