A Message from our Fearless Leader—Bob Capshew

Oliver Winery Tasting –February 8 meeting –Prost Room

This month we are pleased to welcome Oliver Winery.  Oliver’s was founded by Bill Oliver, a true pioneer in the Indiana wine industry.  Bill planted 5 acres of French hybrid grapes in Monroe County and began making wine in his basement during the 1960s.

Bill Oliver, who was an Indiana University law professor, drafted a bill to legalize small farm wineries in Indiana.  The Indiana law was modeled after the Pennsylvania small farm winery law that encouraged using local produce to make alcohol – what a great idea!  The Indiana Small Farm Winery Act was passed in 1971 and allowed the production of 50,000 gallons per year.

After outgrowing his basement operation, Bill Oliver obtained a winemaking license in 1972.  One of the first products was named “Camelot Mead,” one of the rarest of commercially fermented beverages.  In the late 1970s Oliver Winery staged wine festivals with bluegrass bands which Maureen and I fondly remember.

Oliver’s current offerings include wines made from French hybrid grapes, Vinifera grapes, blackberry, cherry and even fermented cider.  The winery has great facilities with a pond, a 300 ton sculpture, and a spacious post & beam tasting room.  It’s definitely worth a stop just north of Bloomington on highway 37.

Many current movements that espouse the “buy local” concept point to small farm winery laws as an example of success.  The Indiana wineries have grown from nothing in the 1960s to 35 currently.  (For more information about Indiana’s wineries visit http://www.indianawines.org/wineries).  As homebrewers we should all continue to embrace the “buy local” concept by supporting our local wineries (and breweries) that so greatly enhance our fermented beverage choices.

Free Homebrewing Ingredients

The FOSSILS club has a standing offer to pay for ingredients if you will bring half of your beer to one of the club meetings.  For example, if you make a 10 gallon batch, bring 5 gallons to the next meeting and you will get your 5 gallons for free.  What a deal!

The club is also working on upgrading its equipment.  We are going to refurbish some 5 gallon kegs which will be available for the above offer.  We also have a CO2 tank donated by Eric Waters that we will keep with the club’s cold plates.

We also encourage homebrew bottles, growlers, mini-kegs and of course kegs at our meetings.

For Sale
